Australian Recipes and Cuisine
Australia has many historic links with the United Kingdom, including, not least, the fact the first European settlers in the country were from the United Kingdom, and that the country was a British colony and later a Dominion within the British Empire. As you might expect given this history, many Australian dishes have been inspired by traditional British cooking, and meals based around pies, and roasted or grill meat, remain popular to this day.
Since World War II, Australia has also seen increased immigration with Mediterranean countries and Southeast Asia, and this has greatly enriched the variety of Austrlian cuisine. New recipes, unique to Australia have also been developed, sometimes based on unique Australian plants, and also inspired by “bush tucker” (foraged food, often inspired by traditional aboriginal recipes).
Some uniquely Australian foods include:
- Pie floater - A British style meat pie. However, the pie is covered with tomato sauce, turned upside down and served in a thick green pea soup.
- Damper - A traditional recipe for travellers in the outback, damper is Wheat-based soda bread that can easily be prepared at the roadside.

The Art Of Wine Tasting
The Art Of Wine Tasting
Even though many just assume that wine tasting is sipping, swishing, and swallowing - many are amazed to find that it?s actually a bit more. Wine tasting is more of an art, an art that is used to distinguish the taste of fine wines. Wine can be a tasty and refreshing drink - if the bottle was stored correctly and aged properly.
Wine tasting begins with the swishing. The reason why wine tasters swish the wine around in their mouths is to get the taste. Both the front and the back areas of the tongue contain taste buds, although neither one has any distinct sensation in taste. Taste buds can detect food and liquid that is bitter, salty or sweet, without a problem. To get the proper taste from wine however, you need to swish it around in your mouth and allow your taste buds and sense of smell to bring out the unique and fine flavors in the wine.
Malva Pudding - South African Dessert Recipe
Almost every restaurant in Cape Town has Malva Pudding on its dessert menu. It is one of those ubiquitous dishes that one has to side-step diplomatically, as a tour manager organising menus for a week of dinners for clients on walking holidays. If you’re not careful you could end up with a gastronomic tour of Cape Town’s Malva Puddings! That’s not to say that it is not a good dessert choice. It is rich, delicious and indulgent and has to be tasted at least once on a gourmet tour of Cape Town. Along with many other traditional South African dishes it gives a nod to the Netherlands for its origins. Essentially a rather homely baked cakey pudding, its restaurant version soaks itself in a rich, creamy sauce to take on a mantle of decadence, while elegant versions serve themselves up with a few poached apricots alongside too.
No-one seems to know where the name Malva pudding came from - suggestions range from a traditional accompaniment of Malvasia wine, a heavy dessert wine, to a woman named Malva creating it back in the mists of time.
I Love Italian Wine and Food - The Piedmont Region
Piedmont is located in the northwest of Italy. It borders on France and Switzerland and is surrounded on three sides by the Alps. The name Piedmont means the foot of the mountain. Piedmont is one of the most industrialized regions of Italy. It is considered the best organized region of Italy for wine tourism. Its population is about 4.4 million.
Piedmont was originally settled by the Celts. It was conquered by Hannibal and reconquered by the Ancient Romans. Piedmont was ruled by the French Savoy family for almost five hundred years. It was a center in the fight to unify Italy. Victor Emmanuel II, the king of Piedmont and Sardinia, became the first king of modern Italy in 1861.
Agriculturally Piedmont has it all. For example, meats include beef, kid, lamb, rabbit, and veal. Game includes hare, partridge, pheasant, and venison. Donkey meat stew is a local specialty. Another specialty is grissini, breadsticks that are a yard long. The region makes nine protected varieties of cheese. About the only food that seems to be a bit short is fresh fish, with the exception of trout.
