Lithuanian Cuisine
Lithuania is a republic in Northern Europe. The country, which lies on the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea, has many historic and cultural links with its neighbors, which include Poland and Russia. For long periods, it was in fact part of larger states in combination with what are today neighboring countries, first from 1569 to 1795 as part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, then 1795 to 1918 as part of the Russian Empire, and finally from 1940 to 1990 as part of the USSR.
Lithuanian cuisine has a style that is all of its own, but also shows influences from Russian, Polish, German, and Ashkenazi Jewish recipes. Some popular Lithuanian recipes include:
* Bulviniu kukuliu sriuba - This is a type of soup. It is made as follows - minced potato is shaped into balls, and then these are then boiled in milk.
* Baršciai - Baršciai is the Lithuanian version of “borscht” (beet soup). Lithuanians add chopped mushrooms to the dish, and may also add butter or sour cream.
* Sauerkraut soup - A soup made from sauerkraut. The dish is flavored with pork, carrots, onions and bay leaves.
Dutch Recipes and Cuisine
Dutch cuisine is very much influenced by the agricultural produce of the Netherlands and the country’s history as a seafaring nation. Fish and seafood (including cod, eel, herring, mackerel, mussels, oysters, plaice, salmon, sardines, soleidae, shrimp, trout and tuna) are all eaten in the Netherlands. Popular meats include beef, chicken and pork.
The colonial past of the Netherlands has also had an influence on the country’s cuisine. The Dutch were involved in the Dutch East Indies (Dutch: Nederlands-Indië) - present day Indonesia - for approximately 250 years, and Indonesian cuisine has left a lasting mark on the Dutch palate. Indonesian dishes such as Nasi Goreng (spicy rice with chicken or pork) have become Dutch dishes too!
Here are some other popular Dutch dishes:
- Balkenbrij - A liverwurst sausage loaf (Dutch: Leverworst) made from pork, but containing enough pork liver to have a distinctive liver-taste. The loaf is cut into slices about ½ inch (1 centimeter) thick which are then fried.
- Boerenkoolstamppot - A stew made with potato and kale. It is served with gravy and rookwurst (Dutch spicy sausage).
- Hete bliksem - Boiled potatoes and green apples, with stroop (syrup) or diced speck (juniper-flavored dry-cured ham).
Wine Food Pairing For The Best Dinner Party
If you’re looking to hold a dinner party, whether for your friends, family or coworkers, and you plan on having wine with dinner, you should pay attention to wine food pairing. Certain wines are excellent with certain foods. This is most often seen in fine restaurants where menus will have wine recommendations next to certain food items.
To get a list of wine food pairing options, search online or call one of those restaurants where they should be more than willing to help you out. So if you want your dinner party to go on without a hitch and you want it to be unforgettable then choose your wines and foods according to wine food pairing and plan everything down to the minor detail. That should have people talking about your party for a long time to come.
Wine food pairing is very important because some wines are sweet, while others are bitter, and these tastes go best with certain foods. Nearly all wine goes great with cheese, for instance, which is why you usually see wine and cheese sold in the same locations in stores. Nevertheless, some wines don’t go very well with certain foods. You can sample them to see which ones go with certain foods, which is very fun, or you can find a list that teaches you proper wine food pairing.
